What happens to the waste that has been collected during Ocean Initiative? Can we recycle it?

Collected waste is usually sent to waste reception centres. Actually, since it has been contaminated by salted water and UV rays, this waste cannot go through the traditional waste recycling process. Surfrider is not satisfied with this solution and we are looking for new possibilities in order to recycle waste collected during the Ocean Initiatives with a circular economy approach.

If there are several participants, must they all register via the website or can we do it on the day of the operation?

Registration via the website is currently the simplest solution. If, however, you are unable to do this, you may simply contact the organiser and ask him to print out and bring the “List of Participants” from the Organiser’s Guide. You will then be able to register using this document on the day of the operation. Please note that the same email address may be used to register different participants (for example, members of the same family).

What should we do if the local authority refuses to give us permission to organise the collection?

This would be an exceptional occurrence. If this should be the case, approach another local authority in order to organise your Ocean Initiatives there or contact your closest local chapter to see if they can suggest an alternative action.

What should we do with our waste if the municipality does not provide a container to store it?

You have two solutions if a container is not provided:

  1. Ask the local town hall where you may leave your bags for the local waste collection services to pick them up on their rounds
  2. Take the bags to the nearest waste reception centre

Can someone from Surfrider come to coordinate our collection?

The Ocean Initiatives have been developed to enable citizens to conduct collection completely autonomously, even if you do not have any particular knowledge about aquatic waste. The tools provided by Surfrider make the presence of a member of the Surfrider team unnecessary to coordinate the collection.

I am currently organizing a collection with my company, and I wish communicate about its involvement. Which kind of communication tool I should use?

Every company involved into Ocean Initiatives can communicate about its commitment from their internal and external social networks. As an example, you could use a communication like “The company X is proud about its Ocean Initiative realization. Be involved as well !”

However, it’s forbidden to communicate as a support or a partner of the Ocean Initiatives or Surfrider Foundation Europe, except if you organization is part orf the official campaign partner. To become a partner, please contact us through this online form.

Can a company profit from a specific support from the organization?

Surfrider has developed a format called « Corporate Environmental Awareness Days », which is specifically designed to help them raising environmental awareness among their employees and to implement their Corporate Social Responsibility strategies. Each event is customized to suit your needs and your expectations. Click here for more information.
