Description

Coastal areas such as this in Øygarden are affected by plastic pollution due to ocean currents. I want to organise a crew for a mission to collect plastic from the coastal mountainous terrain in this area. Øygarden is basically an archipelago - a long string of small islands accessible by bridges and ferries. The island that we will be working at is Lisla Lyngøyna. To reach it, we should get collective transport from the partners of the OPERATION ØYGARDEN.

Preliminary plastic collection dates:
Group I - Aril 30
Group II - June 11

This string of islands forms a barrier between the sea and fjords, so it becomes like a fishing net for waste. According to the NORCE research centre, some waste drifts past and further north, but a lot is left along the coast. OPERATION ØYGARDEN should contribute to reduction of long-term consequences for all of us.

Everyone is welcome to join our mission. To get more people to collect plastic, I will collaborate with Erasmus Student Network (ESN) since I am one of their volunteers. Also, I will contact Den Norske Turistforening (The Norwegian Trekking Association) because they know these territories well and know what precautions we should apply to this slightly dangerous coastal operation. Since the operation will run on the rocky shore, we will ask Øygarden Røde Kors (Red Cross of Øygarden) for safety equipment, if they will have enough capacity.

To find the exact places of the most polluted areas, we will collaborate with researchers from NORCE, since they have investigated Øygarden areas. In addition, they have conducted fieldwork together with organisations and volunteers from before.

Briefly more about the situation in Øygarden. The Norce research centre in Bergen has published a report which shows that Researchers are finding clear signs that the coastal landscape is changing as a result of the extensive amount of plastic pollution found in the ocean.
