Ocean Initiatives – a weekend dedicated to school children and the general public.
At a time when ecology is making headline news, we sound the alarm on
environmental protection. Surfrider Foundation Europe, an association dedicated to the protection of the ocean, waves and coastlines, is gearing up for yet more action.
For the 13th successive year, Surfrider Foundation Europe is organising beach, lakes and river clean-up operations entitled Ocean Initiatives (OIs).
Ocean Initiatives offer each of us the
opportunity to organise a local operation to protect the well-being of
the planet. The goal is of course to clean up, but also to show to
everyone (general public and authorities alike) that it is time to take
action. Awareness raising will obviously focus on the problems of waste
but also on the global ecological issue, climate change. All
participants will be strongly encouraged to use public transport or to
use car sharing to travel to and from the beach cleaning locations.
Each year waste is also discharged into
lakes and rivers; hence the Ocean Initiatives are including these too
in the clean-up operations. By coming together over the same weekend,
volunteers have an opportunity to demonstrate the love and respect they
have for the ocean, lakes and rivers. Last year’s event attracted
around 10,000 participants to the coasts of Europe and elsewhere.
Surfrider Foundation Europe works in
conjunction with the other branches of Surfrider Foundation: Surfrider
USA, Surfrider Australia, Surfrider Japan and Surfrider Brazil. This
year and during the Ocean Initiatives, the Head Office of Surfrider
Foundation Europe is pleased to host a delegation from Surfrider
Foundation USA.
