What are they ?
A pilot project consists of a beach
cleaning operation accompanied by a specific educational initiative,
offering added value in terms of media coverage and enables information
to be passed on to the public, with the involvement†of a partner
of the association: a syndicate of local communities, an association or
waste sorting centre.
This year’s Ocean Initiatives programme is being extended to include lakes and rivers. Accordingly pilot projects will be managed in the same way as ocean operations.
Two objectives :
• Awareness rising : choosing an event that harnesses the power of the media to attract the largest possible number of participants.
• Education : informing school children and the general public of the fragility of our coastline.
Examples of clean-up operations :
Visiting the GuÈthary wastewater treatment plant :
Cleaning the beach at Cenitz followed by visit to the wastewater treatment plant.
Releasing birds back into the wild in Hendaye :
We organized the rescue and subsequent release of oil stricken birds following spillages.
Clean-up on the Isles of Chausey :
A clean-up of the main island by school pupils was organized after
which the smaller islands were cleaned up using boats by the general
public.
Global warming and aquatic fauna :
The aim of this project was to raise awareness in school pupils of the impact of climate change on aquatic fauna.
Beach clean-up followed by visit to the Maritime museum in Biarritz.
